An internationally-acclaimed artist, Gilliam effectively liberated the painting surface from a flat plane with his draped canvas paintings of the late sixties. Gilliam has continually reinvented the painting process employing new materials and techniques in all of his work. Lately, his large abstract paintings are brightly colored multi-dimensional panels that are pinned in the corners and held apart in the center, with cut out elements that reveal surprises and unexpected vistas.
